Learning Style Scenarios

Margaret always listens carefully to instructions on how to use her iPad more effectively. She wants to be able to skype her great-grandchildren as she loves keeping in touch and hearing what they have been up to. Her daughter is telling her the steps to successfully use the skype program and she listens intently, regularly repeating the instructions back to her daughter, to make sure she has fully understood. She also writes each step down in her well used notebook.

Geraldine is making a photo book of all her favourite places that she has travelled to in the world. Each week a volunteer comes to her home to support her to complete the project. To help her remember how to get into the photo book computer program she has created a diagram of connecting boxes and arrows to explain each action she needs to accomplish.

Joseph wants to use his iPad to take photos of the many varieties of flowers growing in his garden. He then wants to send his best photos to his daughter who lives inter-state. He has been having a volunteer assist him with the process. At first, he found he couldn’t do it on his own because the coaching sessions seemed to jump from one topic to another – the steps just didn’t make sense. After discussing this with the volunteer, he realised that Joseph needed to learn the steps in a more logical order. They also had success by focusing on one part of the process at a time.

Jessie has chosen to learn how to use her iPad in a group session that meets weekly. She loves the discussions and when she has a problem she gets everyone involved to find a solution. She loves to play games, especially a cooking and time management game app which she and her friend Madeline play together and have fun discussing their accomplishments.
